STBP120 chip protects the charging-control circuitry
ST Microelectronics has introduced a new IC for cellphones and mobile devices that will help combat the environmental impact of large numbers of battery chargers discarded when their owners upgrade to newer equipment.
Organizations including the Chinese government and the GSM Association are proposing standard battery-charger connectors and voltages to allow universal chargers for mobile phones. These efforts are focusing on USB standards as a convenient.
The STBP120 chip protects the charging-control circuitry inside cellphones and other battery-powered portable equipment in case the external charger applies an excessive voltage. If the detected voltage exceeds a preset threshold, an internal solid-state switch is opened, thereby preventing the over-voltage from damaging the internal circuitry.
The STBP120 also monitors its own junction temperature and switches off the internal MOSFET if the junction temperature exceeds the specified limit.
The STBP120 device can be controlled by the microcontroller and can also provide status information about fault conditions.
Main features of the STBP120 chip are : input overvoltage protection up to 28 V , integrated high voltage N-channel MOSFET switch , lLow RDS(on) of 90 mΩ , Integrated charge pump , thermal shutdown protection , softstart feature to control the inrush current , enable input (EN) , fault indication output (FLT) , IN input ESD withstand voltage up to ±15 kV (air discharge) up to ±8 kV (contact discharge) in typical application circuit with 1μF input capacitor (±2 kV HBM for standalone device ) .
